My Nicaragua Journey

In August 2022, my husband, Dan, and I embarked on an adventure that would forever change our lives. Packed with a fervent desire to empower the incredible women of the Joining Hearts Program, we set our compass for Nicaragua. This incredible journey began in 2019 when I felt a divine calling to establish Joining Hearts International. Our mission: to mentor, coach, and invest in the home-based businesses of impoverished women across the globe.

Before our move, I'd ventured into Nicaragua on numerous occasions.....
Armed with the knowledge of potential challenges such as erratic water and electrical supplies, language barriers, cultural differences, and the scarcity of familiar products, I thought I was prepared. But as the saying goes, there's always a "but" or a "however."

As we delved into the day-to-day life of Nicaragua, the chasm between theory and reality became glaringly apparent. Having mere head knowledge about a place and its challenges is a far cry from experiencing them firsthand. It's an epiphany that has reshaped our perspective.

I watch my Nicaraguan neighbors, their faces glistening with sweat, cooking over open fires in temperatures that could fry an egg on the pavement. With an astonishing 85% humidity, the sweltering conditions would be unbearable for most. Yet, they persevere, day in and day out. They may be accustomed to this lifestyle, but it doesn't make it easy.

Some Nicaraguans are more fortunate than others, but that's not the reality for the majority of rural Nicaraguans. Nicaragua is often regarded as the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, with a staggering 30% of its population living below the poverty line.

The disparity between urban and rural life is stark. While 30% of Nicaraguans live in poverty and 8% in extreme poverty, these numbers skyrocket to 50% and 11.5% respectively in rural areas. The numbers don't merely represent statistics; they represent people, their struggles, and their hopes.

In rural areas, the lives of women revolve around their homes. The reasons are multifaceted. School buildings are shared, with elementary and secondary students alternating in half-day attendance. Women want to contribute to their households, but the safety of their homes is a concern. Petty theft is rampant, and any unattended item can easily vanish. Cooking, a daily chore, is a laborious process, requiring hours of preparation in the scorching heat.

Yet, amidst these challenges, I see a wealth of potential in the resilient women of Nicaragua. They are resourceful, ingenious, and formidable. These women, whose strength shines in the face of adversity, are the beating heart of Joining Hearts International.

Our mission isn't just about providing opportunities; it's about igniting the flame of hope and unleashing the untapped potential of these extraordinary women. Their stories are a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the power of resilience. As we continue this journey together, we are reminded that change begins with empathy, understanding, and the unwavering belief that, despite all odds, these women can thrive.

Some of their stories are featured below in video.

This is Aleyda's Story in 2019.
She has saved money since that time and was able to pay for major surgery this year that was needed with her surgery.  She does not have health insurance and has to pay for services with cash.
